In a unanimous vote this week, the Monroe County Tourist Development Council (TDC) has moved to terminate its long-standing contract with the public relations firm, Newman PR. The decision follows legal troubles for the firm's owner, Andy Newman, who is facing multiple misdemeanor charges, including perjury and making false official statements.
The charges against Newman, 68, stem from an independent investigation and audit conducted over recent months. Authorities took Newman into custody last month, though he has since been released on bond.
Despite the serious nature of the charges, the TDC board, including Monroe County Mayor Holly Raschein, expressed gratitude for Newman’s contributions. During the meeting, board members acknowledged his more than three decades of service in promoting tourism for the county.
“We appreciate the hard work and dedication Andy has shown over the years,” Mayor Raschein said. “However, in light of the current situation, it’s time for the TDC to move in a new direction.”
Newman PR has been an integral part of Monroe County's tourism marketing efforts, handling public relations and communication campaigns that have shaped the region’s image and attracted millions of visitors annually. The termination marks the end of a significant chapter in the TDC’s promotional strategies, leaving the council to seek a new firm to oversee its public relations needs.
The case against Newman is ongoing, and further legal proceedings are expected in the coming weeks. The TDC is expected to issue a request for proposals as it begins the process of finding a new public relations firm.
